The lethal effects of δ-HXTX appear to be restricted to primates, including humans. So it’s likely that Hadronyche nadgee has a very similar peptide. The sequence of amino acids in δ-HXTX has been determined for 10 species of funnel-web spiders and it is surprisingly similar across all of those species. As a result, nerve cells fire for longer than normal. It inhibits the closing of those channels, which is a normal part of the conduction of electrical signals in nerve cells. δ-HXTX exerts its effects by binding to sodium channels in nerve cell membranes. It is a short protein (a peptide) dubbed delta-hexatoxin (δ-HXTX). Bites from at least 5 Hadronyche species have caused serious illness in humans with a similar envenomation syndrome to Atrax robustus.Ī single molecule has been shown to be responsible for the envenomation effects of funnel-web spiders. However, it is almost certain that other Atrax and Hadronyche species are as venomous as Atrax robustus. This is the smallest atracid species described to date.
